The biggest worry I had was that I'd be away from home and the town. However, when I came to the island, everyone was so welcoming. I couldn't believe how calm the island was as well. I started at Coláiste Naomh Eoin in first year, so I am here nearly 5 years now. I stayed with 2 brilliant families during that time. One of the best things about the school is the small classes because everyone can get more time with the teachers.
I have been a pupil at this school since my family moved to Inis Meáin from Poland. From the beginning the teachers and pupils helped me with my Irish and helped me settle into the way of life here. The school has great woodwork and science facilities - 2 of my favourite subjects. I'm hoping to go on to do a degree in medicine or something similar next year and I believe the education I'm receiving will help me in my future life.
When I first heard about the school I thought it'd be great craic taking part in something like this. As I thought about it some more I realised it would be great to be able to live in the Gaeltacht, a place that is extremely important with regards to the culture of Ireland. When I arrived, everyone I met was so happy and friendly which influenced my hughly. I feel like I'm succeeding far more here than I would in a larger school because of the small class sizes. I'm so happy I came here.
I originally left the island to attend a different secondary school - after growing up in such a remote area, I wanted to get a feel for city life. I attended a chool on the mainland with 300 pupils. Thanks be to God, I changed my mind and came back here. There are a lot of advantages with this school, but especially the small classes since every child can take part and the class and ultimately, learn more. We recieve more help and attention, something that doesn't happen in other schools. I was also happier amoung my old friends.
My first thoughts coming to the island were how friendly the locals were and I thought I could be myself here. At last, when I was to start at the school I was delighted to find out that I would be the only boy in 5th class and I ould be in a class with 5 other girls! It was very different as there were only boys in my last school.
